Step 1: Research Career Duties and Education
Electronics Technicians provide regular maintenance on electronic equipment. They repair and install numerous electronic systems, including everything from stereos and alarm systems to missile control systems. Electronics Technicians work with computer programs and automated test equipment in order to make sure electronic equipment functions properly and safely. Electronics Technicians run software programs to diagnose electricity problems and install new automated controls on old manufacturing equipment. Electronics Technicians also perform calibration checks on electronic equipment and conduct engineering tests. This requires knowledge of how to read schematics, sketches and manufacturers' specifications and strong communication skills, hand-eye coordination and problem-solving abilities. Electronics Technicians must have at least a high school diploma, but certification is preferred.

Step 2: Earn a High School Diploma
Future Electronics Technicians should complete their high school education and gain a diploma. Students should take classes in science and computers so they can learn about the basics in electricity and electronics. They should also practice their language skills so they can read technical language.

Step 3: Consider Obtaining Certification
Electronics Technicians usually have certification. Although it is voluntary, the majority of employers prefer candidates with electronics certification. Technicians may earn several certifications, including Basic/Entry Level Certification, Certified Electronics Technician and stand alone certifications.

Step 4: Find a Job as an Electronics Technician
Electronics Technicians can find jobs in many industries and companies, such as robotics, commercial products, industrial equipment, utilities, construction and motor vehicles.

Step 5: Advance Your Career with an Associate's Degree
Electronics Technicians with an associate's degree, certification and years of experience will have more job opportunities and a higher salary. They can earn an Associate of Science in Electronics at a community college in about two years.
